So what is an Electrocardiograph?

So what is an Electrocardiograph (SECA ECG or EKG, shortened from the German Elektrokardiogramm) it is a drawn graphic produced by an electrocardiograph machine, this prints onto a piece of portioned paper the electrical activity of the heart recorded from the time the equipment is attached. Electro, which is the first part of the word is related to the electrical impulses or activity that are given out by the heart, Cardio is the Greek for heart and Gram, has a Greek root meaning "to write". In the US, the abbreviation "EKG" which as spoken about before is the german abbreviation is often preferred over "SECA ECG". "SECA ECG" is used universally in the United Kingdom and lots of other countries. The Sinoatrial node is the place that the hearts electrical impulses come from, the electrical pulse, pulses through the heart’s muscle and makes it into a contraction. The electrical charge that is produced by the Sinoatrial node is then calculated by placing electrical contacts on each side of the heart. The pulse of current travels through the muscle of the heart it is printed down by the SECA ECG device. The measurements shown on the electrocardiograph SECA ECG are then interpreted to let the doctor understand what is going on through the heart. This gives an indication of the beat of the heart and any lessening of the electrical pulse through the heart. When a doctor is trying to acertain the pumping function of the heart a doctor will look to the newer techniques of ultrasound or nuclear medicine testing. SECA ECG’s are the best way of seeing if there is an irregular heart rate especially in the case of conductive tissue damage in the heart or high and low amounts of dissolved salts.

Health officials had to close the intensive care ward after an electrical fault last year in a hospital. It brings to mind the benefits of ensuring that all equipment is Pat tested by a certified PAT Testing company.

As a safety measure over 60 patients were moved to different wards within the hospital. The following fire report gave the cause as an electrical fault in one of the hospitals air conditioning units. Following the fire the hospital made sure that all of the medical equipment was adequately cleaned and checked, my feeling on this is that the equipment should have been checked by a PAT Testing well in advance, before the incident happened preventing the need for the clean up or the smoke damage to the intensive care unit and lost man hours.

Routine surgery was cancelled for a couple of days and an alternative intensive care area had to be found within the hospital. Things like Stethescopes, bandages, Vitalograph Aspirators and other bits of equipment were effected by the fire but fortunately the Majority of the equipment was okay.
